This antique hand-crank butter churn was made by J & A McFarlane in Glasgow, Scotland and likely dates to the 1800s. The condition is unusually good, with all the original hardware intact, the crank and inner spindle working perfectly, clearly legible original print on the front, and a nice shiny lacquer bringing out the warm wood tones. The paint on the hardware and steel bands around the barrel may be unoriginal, as I have not seen others with these colors. This could be a plus or minus depending on one's taste- I happen to like them as the cheery colors work very well with the tone of the wood, as well as the piece's Scottish origin. The piece as a whole brings a warm, cheery vibe to the room- it makes an excellent decorative piece up on a shelf, or could be used to nice effect as the base of a coffee table.
